Arrows make impression at Weston/Ithaca Invite

Even with only seven wrestlers, the Lancaster varsity wrestling team had an impressive showing at last Saturday’s Ithaca-Weston Invitational, thanks in large part to a number of spectacular individual performances.

As a team, the Flying Arrows finished seventh of 16 teams, scoring 289 total points. The winners from Cashton finished the day with 376 points.

Individually, coach Brad Sturmer had three champions and two runners-up, giving him five of his seven wrestlers in the finals.

Lancaster’s top point getter on Saturday was 195-pound senior David Chadd, who won his weight class and gave his team 53.5 points.

Chadd improved to 27-0 on the season, and 140-21 in his career, when he picked up an injury default over Jacob Robinson of Cambridge in his championship match.

Fellow senior Cole Martin continued on his winning ways, winning the 145-pound title and picking up 52 points on the day.

Martin, who is now 27-1 this season, and 146-7 in his high school career, defeated Weston/Ithaca’s Stetson Clary by a score of 7-2 in his championship match.

Prior to that, Martin pinned his first three opponents following a first-round bye.

Lancaster’s other individual champion was 132-pound junior Owen Austin, who picked up 52.5 points on the day.

Austin, who is 13-4 on the season, won by technical fall over David Rodriguez of La Crosse Logan in his championship match, after picking up two pins and a major decision earlier in the day.

At 170 pounds, senior Tyson Wolf picked up his 100th career victory at Saturday’s Invite, and finished second to Iowa-Grant’s Luke Nowak (26-3), who beat Wolf, 12-1, in the third round.

Wolf went on to defeat Taylor Jarzynski of Wisconsin Dells and Brandon Banker of Richland Center to earn second place.

On the year, Wolf is 19-7, and now has a career record of 102-49.

Also picking up second-place honors at 152 pounds was junior Dustin Reynolds, who suffered a 6-2 loss to Waterloo’s Ben Lincks (19-0) in his championship match.

One night prior to Saturday’ Weston/Ithaca Invite, the Flying Arrows hosted Prairie du Chien in a Southwest Wisconsin Conference dual meet, which Lancaster lost, 45-33.

Starting the meet at 132 pounds, Lancaster took a 27-0 lead with four straight pins by freshman Gabe Hudson, junior Owen Austin, senior Cole Martin and junior Dustin Reynolds, followed by a decision for Tyson Wolf.

The Flying Arrows then gave up forfeits in six of the remaining nine weights, as well as a pin at 195 pounds, and a 2-1 decision in the heavy weight match.

The only points Lancaster received in the final nine weights, was a forfeit awarded to Chadd at 220 pounds.

With the loss, Lancaster fell to 1-2 in SWC dual meets, heading into this Friday night’s match at Richland Center.

According to the latest state individual rankings by Crossface Magazine, Martin and Chadd are the state’s top ranked wrestlers in their respective weight class, regardless of school size, and both have been named to the Crossface 2014-15 Mid-Season All-State/All-Inclusive Team.
