Hornets win first game, then bow to Dodgeville

Dodgeville deprived the Richland Center Hornets of a sweep in SWC soccer action during the past week.

Dodgeville topped the Hornets, 6-1, at Dodgeville Tuesday. The loss left the Hornets with a 1-8 record.

The Hornets’ lone goal came on a penalty kick by senior Shauni Fink. 

Coach Joe Stadler said Nina Myszkowski played well in goal while Fink, Julischka Hainzl, and Keiyah Jones “worked hard”. Stadler noted the Hornets were short-handed due to illness and injury. He said captains Haley Salisbury and Summer Heron were among those sidelined. 

The Hornets battled the Dodgers to a 1-1 tie in the JV battle. Julie Fontannaz accounted for the Hornets’ goal.

The loss came on the heels of the Hornets’ first victory of the season. The Hornets ended an eight-game losing streak when they romped past the Prairie du Chien Blackhawks, 10-0, in a match which was ended after 87 minutes due to the 10-goal rule.

Sophomore Summer Heron scored four goals as the Hornets’ dominated offensively. 

The Hornets, led by strong midfield play by senior Shauni Fink, applied constant pressure on the Blackhawks.

The Hornets scored in the first minute. Fink slipped through the Blackhawks and converted a rebound from point-blank range to get the Hornets started. Heron had a hat trick within the first 10 minutes of action. She scored the Hornets’ next three goals as the Hornets built a 4-0 lead. Keeley Liska, Haley Salisbury and Abby Ruetten found the net and Heron’s fourth goal gave the Hornets a commanding 8-0 lead at intermission.

The scoring pace slowed in the second half. The Hornets kept the pressure on but struggled to convert. Finally, Salisbury scored her second goal of the night. In the 87th minute, Kaiser finished off the 10-0 win. 

 

The Hornets, now 1-3 in the SWC and 1-9 overall, will host Platteville/Lancaster Thursday at 5 p.m. It will T-shirt Night for fans. Following the varsity match, a JV match is planned. The Hornets will also play at River Valley Tuesday.
