LA CROSSE – Three wrestlers for the Flying Arrows placed among the top eight in their respective weight class at the always competitive 36th annual Bi-State Classic held last Friday and Saturday.

As a team, the Flying Arrows placed sixth in the Division 3 field of 18 teams, scoring 124.5 total points, well behind the top team from Stratford who scored 319.5.

Lancaster’s top point getter and top finisher was senior heavyweight Tyler Hale, who placed fifth and scored 32 total points after entering the tournament as the 18th seed.

Hale suffered a loss in the third-round of competition to Tyson Sommer (19-1) of Athens, who is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the division 3 field. He then went on to collect four straight victories before losing in the consolation semifinals, again to Sommer, by a score of 5-0.

Before matching up with Sommer for the second time, Hale defeated Carson McCauley of Ithaca/Weston by a score of 7-4, which coach Brad Sturmer called one of the most memorable matches he’s been a part of.

Hale concluded the tournament with a 1-0 win over Alan Olkowski of Waunakee in his fifth-place match, and currently has a season record of 17-7.

Collecting 25 points for the Flying Arrows and coming home with a sixth-place finish was 182-pound junior Troy Klein, who is now 20-3 on the year.

Klein entered the tournament with an undefeated record and a high seed in his bracket, and after three straight victories to start the tournament, suffered a 5-2 loss in the quarterfinals. He then lost again in the consolation semifinals, and concluded the tournament with a 9-4 loss in his fifth-place match against Marshall Westfall of Athens.

Freshman Remington Bontreger picked up 22.5 points for the Arrows and finished eighth in the 106-pound weight class after going 4-3 in the tournament.

After three straight victories, Bontreger suffered his first loss in the quarterfinals, then followed that up with a victory in the sixth round.

His seventh-round match ended in a pin by Ross Herber of Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson), which was followed by a loss in his seventh-place match against Alex Pellowski of Holmen.

Bontreger brings back a season record of 18-4.

This Thursday night the Flying Arrows host Richland Center in Southwest Wisconsin Conference dual-meet action, and then on Saturday hosts the Lancaster Invite, which will begin at 9 a.m.
