The Updraft Brew Pub next to Steve’s Pizza Palace in Platteville will be one story shorter than planned, but the same overall size.

The city Historic Preservation Commission approved the changes to the project April 19.

The Updraft now will be about two feet shorter, instead of one story higher, than Steve’s Pizza to the west. Eliminating a stair tower in the back will mean the building will be about the same size as previously planned.

“The footprint of it has not changed,” said Tammy Black of Delta 3 Engineering.

The commission in January approved demolishing the ViewPoint Graphics building at 155 E. Main St., and didn’t take action on the request to demolish the building at 45 S. Chestnut St. because it wasn’t in a city historic district. The ViewPoint building space will replace the alley that currently exists next to Steve’s, where the Updraft will be built. The Common Council vacated part of Jones Street, the alley, to make space for the Updraft in January.

The proposed two new restaurants will be open evenings and weekends. Steve’s will open weekdays for lunch when the project is completed.
