A fire destroyed a vehicle July 17 in the Village of De Soto on Devlin St.

According to a news release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Mellem, 66, of De Soto was traveling south on Devlin St. when he heard a loud pop.  At that time he saw flames coming out from under the front fenders.

He attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful.

The De Soto and Ferryville Fire Departments arrived and put the fire out.

Mellem’s vehicle was a total loss.

The accident remains under investigation.
