VIROQUA — The Hillsboro cross country team closed out what head coach Ben Leis calls its “preseason” schedule last Thursday at the Viroqua Invitational.

“This is what I like to call the end of the preseason,” explained Leis, who has been having his team train hard regardless of the race schedule for the first three weeks of the season. “We will now stop training through meets and let the kids get their legs under them in between races.”

Freshman Annie Haas continued to impress in her first varsity season, finishing seventh out of 106 runners with a time of 22:29.25.

Senior Adriana Reese is solidifying herself as the Tigers number two runner placing 31st with a time of 25:11.46.

Shauna Parish finished 41st (26:06.87), followed by Michaeala Bach at 56th (27:50.2) and Destiny Shore at 57th (27:56.75) to round out Hillsboro’s scoring line-up.

The Hillsboro girls scored 157 points and finished fifth out of 12 teams.

Westby, which had five finishers in the top 13, won the girls’ title just ahead of La Crosse Central 48–54.

In the boys’ competition top overall finisher Sam Pinkowski (17:37.62) led La Crosse Central to the team title ahead of runner-up West Salem, 51–83.

Sophomore Zach O’Hair finished 36th at 20:27.81 to lead the Hillsboro boys.

Junior Skyler Fisher turned in his best race of the season finishing 60th in 21:31.87.

Coach Leis also noted the improvement, drive and determination of junior Dylan Thew, who finished 123 at 29:33.78.

Hillsboro participated in the Westby Snowflake Invitational Tuesday and will next travel to the River Valley Invitational on Saturday.
