Belmont flies past Comets
32-point 1st quarter fuels Lady Braves rout
Bel GBB McCarthy layup
BELMONT GUARD Cassie McCarthy (#12) glides in for one of the Lady Braves many layups in the first quarter. Belmont scored 32 points in the opening quarter to cruise over Cassville, 67-25, at BHS on Friday, Dec. 3.

BELMONT – After losing to Belmont by 53 points earlier in the season, the last thing Cassville needed in the rematch was to face the Braves when they had a chip on their shoulder.
Unfortunately for the winless Comets, that’s exactly what happened on Friday night
Following a dismal offensive performance in a disappointing loss to Mineral Point to start off the week, the Lady Braves could not wait to get back onto the court to shake off that performance.
Belmont ripped off the first 14 points of the game then added an 18-0 scoring burst later in the first quarter to bury the Comets en route to a 67-25 Six Rivers West victory at BHS on Feb. 3.
Using a stifling defensive effort to fuel the transition game, the Braves (15-3 overall, 5-1 in SRW) nailed layup after layup to race out to a 14-0 lead just three minutes into the game and they never looked back.
Junior guard Cassie McCarthy dropped in six points on three layups during the hosts’ early run and she added two more baskets during an 18-0 run that put the Braves ahead 32-2 by the close of the first quarter.
Senior Molly Bockhop and freshman Keegan Kamps each added eight points in the opening quarter, while senior Kailee Kamps tallied six points in the period.
The points continued to come fast and furious for the Braves in the second quarter as they pasted another 21 points on the scoreboard to build up a 53-13 halftime advantage.
Ke. Kamps finished the night with a season-high 15 points, while Bockhop and Kai. Kamps chipped in with 12 points apiece and McCarthy netted 11 points for the Braves.
Senior Amanda Adams contributed six of her eight points in the second quarter, and sophomore Jordyn Kamps added six points for the hosts.
Senior guard Stephanie Muench paced the Comets (0-14, 0-5) with 11 points and senior forward Harley Anderson scored seven points.
At Wauzeka, on Monday, Feb. 6, the Lady Braves played Wauzeka-Steuben even in the odd-numbered frames and dominated the host Hornets in the even-numbered to charge away with a 44-25 non-conference victory.
Belmont broke open a 7-7 game with an 11-3 second-quarter run, and then added to their eight-point advantage by outscoring the Hornets (3-11) in the fourth quarter by a 16-5 margin to seal the win.
Kailee Kamps led the Lady Braves in scoring for the 15th time this season with her game-high 15 points, and junior Cassie McCarthy followed with 14 points for Belmont.
Belmont heads to Benton on Thursday, Feb. 9, for a SRW game against Benton/Shullsburg, and the Lady Braves host River Ridge on Saturday, Feb. 11, in a key SRW make-up game from Jan. 20. Tip-off for the vasity game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
