POTOSI — Back at full strength, the Potosi volleyball team exacted a bit of revenge Monday night with a 25–23, 25–15, 25–19 sweep of visiting Cassville.

The Chieftains (3–4 SRW), who have now won two straight matches after a 1–4 start, dropped a five-set match at Cassville Thursday, Sept. 24 playing without first-team All-SRW senior Lilly Post.

Monday night junior Kylie Reuter floored a team-high 14 kills and two blocks, and Post added 12 kills, five blocks and two aces as the Chieftains made quick work of the Comets (1–5 SRW) after a slow start.

“I felt the girls started out a little rocky in the first set,” said Potosi head coach Jolene Murray. “We gave them too many points of our errors, but they battled out that game with being behind at times, so that was a good thing for their mentality. They took that into the second and third games and played much better.”

Senior Shae Siegert passed out 16 assists and served up two aces, while junior Mykaylia Bauer made a team-high 23 digs to led the Potosi defense.

Murray’s Chieftains also swept Benton 25–17, 25–14, 25–20 last Thursday night, two nights after a five-set loss to Highland 25–18, 26–28, 21–25, 25–15, 15–13.

Potosi had a 2–1 lead on the Cardinals (4–2 SRW), but couldn’t hold on.

“Highland was definitely a battle,” said Murray. “After losing the first game, the girls battled back to win the next two. The girls let up a little in the fourth. I was disappointed losing in the fifth.

“The first goal of that game was beating them to 10, which we did forcing them to take a time out. We went up 12–9 and then got stuck in a rotation where they tied it up 12–12. We got the next point and then couldn’t stop them at the end.  The match could have gone either way and we just came up short.”

“Against Benton, I feel like we had control of the match from the beginning,” Murray added. “We did give them a few points in that first game off our errors, but then cleaned things up.  The third set was a little closer, but we always stayed about five points ahead.”

Potosi was scheduled to travel to Highland Tuesday night and will now host Belmont tonight at 7:15 p.m. The Chieftains will also host Benton Monday night before traveling to Shullsburg on Thursday.
