Johll, Gates advance to finish season at state track meet
Dylan Johll
Cassville senior Dylan Johll is making a return trip to state in the Division 3 boys 100 and 200-meter dash, where he is seeded third in the 100 and sixth in the 200.

BANGOR – State qualifiers from last Thursday night’s Division 3 Bangor Track & Field Sectional were few and far between, but in the end Dylan Johll of Cassville, and Franci Gates of River Ridge will be making the trip to La Crosse this Friday and Saturday.

While River Ridge had 12 individuals and three relays competing at Thursday’s Bangor Sectional, Gates was the only one to finish in the top four of her event and qualify for the WIAA State Championship.

Clearing a height of 8’9”, Gates finished fourth in the girls pole vault competition, after winning the regional meet at the same height.

Finishing fifth in the pole vault and just missing out on a repeat trip to state was River Ridge senior Sydney Bloom, who cleared 8’6” on Thursday night.

Bloom was the team’s only state participant last season, where she placed 16th in the pole vault with a leap of 8’0”, and held the school record until Gates broke it this season.

Gates’ personal best is 8’9”, which also is the existing school record in the event.

At 8’9”, Gates enters the field of 16 state vaulters seeded 13th, while Gabrielle Janke, a sophomore from Athens, holds the top seed with a height of 10’4”.

The Division 3 girls  pole vault competition gets underway at 10:30 Saturday morning with a starting height of 8’0”.

Cassville senior Dylan Johll will be making a return trip to the state championships in both the 100 and the 200.

Last season, Johll placed 12th in the 100 with a time of :11.53 and was seventh in the 200 at :23.35, just missing the medal stand by one place.

At last Thursday’s Bangor Sectional, Johll won the 100 with a time of :11.11 and placed second in the 200 at :22.78.

His sectional time is the third best of 18 competitors, and puts him in lane six of Friday’s first heat. The top seed belongs to Newman senior Jake Gajewski, who had a sectional time of :10.99.

In the 200, Johll is seeded sixth of 18 competitors, and will be running in lane four of Friday’s first heat. Independence senior Alex Grulkowski and Saint Mary’s Springs senior Sam Spranger share the top seed with identical times of :22.35.

The top 10 preliminary times in the 100 and 200, move on to race in Saturday’s finals.
