Ten-run inning powers Potosi past Lancaster

Potosi’s 12–8 non-conference softball win over Lancaster last Thursday looked from the score like a slugfest with pitching and defensive problems. But it didn’t start that way.
Potosi sophomore Makenzie Brown’s two-run home run in the first inning gave the Chieftains a 2–0 lead, which disappeared a half inning later on a two-run single by Lancaster sophomore Kindra Yoose.
Lancaster then took a 3–2 lead on a RBI triple by sophomore Kera McCarthy, and extended its lead to 5–2 on a two-run home run by sophomore Alexis Galvin, in the top of the fifth.
Then came the bottom of the fifth, where the Chieftains put together a 10-run rally off seven singles, two walks, a triple and an error.
Potosi batted 14 times in the inning, Brown having two singles, and Hawes a single and a triple.
The Arrows added three runs in the top of the seventh on two of Potosi’s three errors and hits by McCarthy and Dreona Drew.
Lancaster was led by McCarthy, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, while Hawes and Brown each went 3-for-4 for the Chieftains, Hawes with two doubles and a triple, Brown with a home run.
Potosi senior Emilie Rojemann picked up the win in the pitching circle, giving up five earned runs off nine hits, while striking out five batters and walking two.
Taking the loss was McCarthy, who in six innings gave up 11 earned runs off 12 hits, while striking out three Potosi batters and walking four.
This past Monday evening, the Chieftains suffered a 10–1 non-conference loss to Barneveld.
The Chieftains were held to just four hits, while giving up 10. Brown went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.
Hawes hit a solo home run in the first inning for Potosi’s only score.
Rojemann took the loss in the circle, giving up 10 runs, four earned, off nine hits in 41/3 innings. Freshman Ally Siegert pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed only one hit.
The Chieftains (2–6, 0–2 Six Rivers West) will follow up this past Tuesday’s game at Wauzeka with a road game at Platteville on Thursday. They will then host Iowa-Grant on Friday and travel to Rio on Saturday.
