BLANCHARDVILLE – Pecatonica/Argyle’s Ben Meyer gave the Vikings a special start and a special end to their Parents’ Night match with Black Hawk.
Meyer, a junior who is diagnosed with high-functioning autism, opened the night by performing the National Anthem and he ended it by posting a 17-0 technical fall over Black Hawk freshman Dean Schlittler in the final match of the meet at 195-pounds to rally the Vikings for a come-from-behind 32-30 victory in a Six Rivers Conference Dual Meet at PHS on Thursday, Jan. 19.
The Warriors (4-12 overall) built up a 30-9 lead on the Vikings with just four matches remaining; but, after forfeit wins by Travis Gilson at 160 and Matus Brzaik at 170 cut the deficit to 30-21, the Vikings used a pin by Lucas McKeon over Doug Meador in 2:37 and Meyer’s technical fall decision to complete the comeback.
The Warriors got pins from Beau Holland over Jeremy Wand in 2:12 at 126 and Zach Sigafus over Jeremiah Tollackson in 4:38 at 152, and forfeits wins from Colin Novak at 106, Jared Pickett at 113 and Crystal Novak at 132 to grab the early lead.
In one of the key matches of the evening, Warrior sophomore Dakota Meier moved up to 145 from his 138 class to take on Pec/Argyle’s Tristan Rosenstiel, but the Viking freshman held up to the challenge by scratching out a 1-0 decision over Meier after the Warrior surrendered a penalty point in the third period for grabbing Rosenstiel’s head gear.
That penalty point proved to be the difference not only in the match but in the meet itself as the Vikings won the final four weight classes to rally from behind for a 32-30 victory.
Black Hawk will participate in the Laconia Duals in Rosendale on Saturday, Jan. 28, starting at 9 a.m.
