NEW GLARUS – Sophomore Jen Wellnitz poured in a game-high 21 points and senior Kate Quinn added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Black Hawk over New Glarus, 53-30, in their non-conference season opener at NGHS on Monday, Nov. 28.
“Monday night was a typical first game in that coaches never know how their teams will respond when “live bullets” start flying. A team can attempt to simulate scenarios all they want, but there’s nothing like that first live contest. As predicted, we found some things we are okay at and some things we need to work on a lot,” said Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan.
The Lady Warriors (1-0 overall) held a slim 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, then sprinted away from the Knights by charging off on a 30-13 run over the next two periods to build up a 42-24 advantage.
“The thing that stood out the most to me was our second-half defense. I credit the kids for buying into some adjustments that we coaches asked them to make, and the results were evident,” noted Flanagan. “Offense always takes time to develop, but we pride ourselves on playing some good defense early in the season, which we were able to do in the second half.”
Wellnitz tallied five rebounds, five steals and three assists to go along with her 21 points, while Quinn chipped in with two assists and senior Kayla Meier pulled down eight rebounds for the Warriors.
Black Hawk heads to Patch Grove on Friday, Dec. 2, for a showdown between two Six Rivers’ Division 5 state qualifiers from a year ago as the Warriors square off against the River Ridge Timberwolves, starting at 7:30 p.m.
