SOUTH WAYNE – The first victory of the season at his alma mater for first-year Black Hawk coach Scott Cernek didn’t come with a lot of drama, but it come with a lot of history as his Warriors walked off with their first win over Barneveld in over 11 years.
After giving up three without the benefit of a hit in the top of the seventh to allow the visiting Golden Eagles to tie the score at eight all, the Warriors plated the winning run when Noah Metz blooped a single into right field to score Brandon Schiferl from second base for a 9-8 victory in the first game of their Six Rivers East twinbill at BHHS on Tuesday, May 1.
It was the Warriors’ first victory over Barneveld since April 16, 2007, snapping a 22-game losing streak to the Eagles.
“Our kids really played well early on in the first game. Jayden Stietz gave us a strong start, and we jumped on them early. Our kids showed some real heart by coming back three times after they had tied the score three different times,” said Cernek.
The Warriors (1-9 overall, 1-6 SRC) grabbed the lead three times in the game, but each time the Eagles were able to fight their way back to even however they could never overtake the hosts.
Black Hawk went up 8-5 in the sixth when Avery Baumgartner drilled a two-out, RBI-double and then scored on a single by Brody Milz.
The Eagles answered back with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh to even the score at 8-8. Four straight walks to open the inning brought in the first run, while a balk, a walk and a hit batter brought in the other two runs. With the bases loaded and the game tied, Rece Shelton struck out Alex Johnson to end the inning and the Warriors came up with the winning run in the bottom of the frame.
“Jason Treuhardt battled out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth by getting the final two outs on a 6-4-3 double play. In the seventh, he got into trouble and Rece had to come in and put out the fire with two big Ks around an infield popout. Rece has been a pleasant surprise on the mound for us. Like most of our pitchers, he doesn’t have much experience, but is learning quickly,” Cernek stated.
Shelton finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Metz went 3-for-4 with two RBI to guide the Warriors’ 15-hit attack.
Baumgartner ripped a pair of doubles and had two RBI and two runs scored in the win, while Jett Rufenacht was 2-for-2 with a triple, a RBI and a run and Jason Treuthardt went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI for the Warriors.
Barneveld rebounded for a 16-5 win in game two to forge a split with the Warriors on Tuesday night. Rufenacht had another triple with a run and a RBI in the second game, while Treuthardt had a RBI-double and scored twice and Baumgartner added a RBI-double.
At Patch Grove, on Friday, May 4, the host Timberwolves swept a Six Rivers’ crossover doubleheader from the Warriors, posting a high-scoring 17-10 decision in game one and eking out a 6-4 win in game two.
The T’Wolves used an eight-run rally in the third inning to erase a 6-1 Warriors’ lead in game one, and then sealed the game with a seven-run outburst in the fourth frame.
In game two, the ‘Wolves scored three times each in the second and third innings to earn the sweep.
Baumgartner went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in the opener. Treuthardt added two doubles in four at-bats with a RBI and three runs scored, while Shelton had two hits and two runs and Stietz had two hits and three RBI for the Warriors.
Milz and Hunter Bredeson each drove in a run and scored a run for Black Hawk in game two.
The Warriors will be busy over the next week with Six Rivers crossover doubleheaders scheduled at Cassville on Friday, May 11 (4:30 p.m.) and at home against Potosi on Monday, May 14 (4 p.m.). They also have non-conference games planned at Belleville on Saturday, May 12 (11 a.m.) and at New Glarus on Tuesday, May 15 (5 p.m.).
