RICHLAND CENTER — For the third straight match 80 minutes wasn’t enough to decide a winner for the Platteville/Lancaster girls’ soccer team.
Down two goalies, three defenders and a midfielder due to a rash of recent injuries coach Mary Hardyman’s Hillmen fought valiantly, but ultimately fell in overtime 3–2.
Richland Center’s Shauni Fink scored the golden goal on a breakaway at the 85:51 mark of the match on an assist from Michaela Campbell.
Platteville sophomore Madi Knockel tied the match in the 56th minute on a beautiful bending direct kick that beat the Hornets’ keeper to the far upper corner.
The Hillmen (1–5, 1–3 SWC) scored the match’s first goal in the 11th minute when Lancaster freshman Brianna Hampton cleaned up a Cassie Hamer rebound that had caromed off the post.
Campbell tied the match in the 31st minute on a similar rebound goal that had ricocheted off Platteville/Lancaster third string goalie Brooke Pagliaro, who was starting in place of freshman starter Andraya Errthum and junior backup goalie/defender Emily Simmons, who are among Platteville/Lancaster’s walking wounded. Sophomore Marissa Marino and sophomore Raven Herlitz also missed the game with injuries and freshman Lauran Thole is battling shin splints.
Pagliaro performed admirably in net, making nine saves in the match.
Fink scored on a crossing pass from Campbell nine minutes into the second half to give the Hornets a 2–1 lead.
Monday afternoon the banged up Hillmen dropped a 10–0 non-conference decision at Belleville/New Glarus.
Platteville/Lancaster (1–5) will return to action Friday at home against Prairie du Chien. The Hillmen will then host Dodgeville on Tuesday.
