MINERAL POINT — The shorthanded Iowa–Grant/Highland and Belmont/Platteville wrestling teams closed out the 2013–14 regular season Saturday at the SWC/SWAL Clash.
With just nine wrestlers and five empty weight classes in the lineup the Iowa–Grant co-op made a valiant team effort, but finished fifth in the final team standings with 171 points.
The Panthers crowned one champion in junior Luke Nowak at 160 pounds, and a pair of runner-ups in senior Cody Rider at 182 and junior Kyle Soderstrom at 220, but were well back of team champion Mineral Point.
The SWAL dual meet champion and host Pointers crowned just two champions, but had just one empty weight class scoring 268 points to capture their ninth overall Clash title.
Riverdale finished second with 225 points, while River Valley (213.5) was third and shorthanded SWC dual meet champion Lancaster (198.5) finished fourth.
Belmont/Platteville finished 13th out of 13 teams with 78 points.
Belmont senior John Hentrich earned the Braves’ top finish with a second-place finish at 145 pounds.
Fellow Belmont senior Lucas Stoney finished fourth at 220.
“I thought overall we wrestled quite well at the Clash,” said Iowa–Grant/Highland head coach Ryan Allen. “ We placed fifth which is good for nine guys, but we still need to sharpen up a few things before regionals on Saturday.”
The Panthers will travel to Patch Grove on Saturday to participate in the WIAA Division 3 River Ridge/Cassville Regional.
Nowak (28–10), who began the season wrestling at 145 pounds, used a first-round bye, a 16–3 major decision over Mineral Point’s Boone Schmitz, and a 16–1 technical fall over Cuba City/Southwestern’s Lucas Kastner to reach the 160-pound final.
In the championship Nowak pinned Fennimore’s Brandon Ashmore in 3:37.
“Luke wrestled very well,” said Allen. “I think he’s growing into his new weight nicely as well as learning how to wrestle heavier, stronger guys. He looked very good in getting the pin in the finals. I think Luke will be a force for the remainder of the year.”
Rider (27–11) used a bye and a pair of pins over Fennimore’s Dalton Miles and Riverdale’s Brady Conner to reach the 182-pound final.
Lancaster’s David Chadd, a two-time Clash champion, ended Rider’s run at a title with a narrow 8–7 decision in the championship round.
“Cody wrestled with a purpose this weekend,” said Allen. “He gave Chadd a very close finals match, but also made some mistakes. Twice we gave up points with less than 15 seconds left in the period and you just can’t do that against a tough wrestler like Chadd. Cody will be ready for regionals.”
Soderstrom (28–13) pinned Fennimore’s Mitchell Phelps and defeated Prairie du Chien/Wauzeka–Steuben’s Alex Wasechek 5–2, before dropping a 9–0 major decision to Mineral Point’s Brenyn Schmitz in the 220-pound championship.
“Kyle got a nice win against a tough kid from Prairie du Chien in the semis, but couldn’t do enough to get the win in the finals,” said Allen. “I know Kyle has been working these last few months and it shows. I think he will have a good week of practice and be ready for Saturday.”
Other top finishers for Iowa–Grant/Highland included Shania Sarbacker finishing fourth at 106 and Jordan Jenks (113), Mikkel Wind (132) and Brian Halverson (152) all placing fifth at their respective weight classes.
Hentrich shines for Belmont/Platteville co-op
As for Belmont/Platteville Hentrich was the Braves’ shining star.
Hentrich (25–8) used a 13–4 major decision over Darlington/Black Hawk’s Casey Lobdell and a 3–1 overtime victory over Mineral Point’s Brandon Forseth to reach the 145-pound final.
Hentrich’s perfect day came to an end with a 3–0 loss to Riverdale’s Jared Roen.
Stoney finished fourth at 220 after back-to-back losses to Mineral Point’s Brenyn Schmitz and Prairie du Chien’s Alex Wasechek.
Platteville senior Austin Loeffelholz also placed fourth at 160 pounds.
Platteville freshman Alex Sargent finished sixth at 113.
Belmont/Platteville dropped a pair of non-conference duals to River Ridge/Cassville (36–22 on Tuesday) and Boscobel (39–30 on Thursday) last week to close out the dual meet season 0–7.
The Braves will travel to Spring Green on Saturday for the WIAA Division 2 River Valley Regional.
