Jesse Heer’s two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped Platteville last-inning rally and lifted the host Hillmen to a 2-1 walk-off victory over River Valley last Tuesday night.
Heer’s game-winning hit was just Platteville’s fifth of the game, but third in the final inning.
With the win, Platteville’s third in a row - all in conference play, the Hillmen improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference.
In the midst of a classic pitcher’s duel Platteville entered its final at-bat with just two hits in the first six innings and facing a 1-0 deficit.
River Valley scored its lone run on a Tyler Jacobson RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.
Platteville junior Hunter Johnston led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, becoming just the fifth Hillman to reach base against River Valley starter Alex Spurley.
After a fly out to center field, Hillmen outfielders Nick Tashner and David Bast rapped back-to-back single. Bast’s base knock plated Johnston and tied the game at 1-1.
After a first-pitch ball, Heer ripped the next pitch he saw for a clean single and delivered a Platteville win.
Hillmen senior Logan Emendorfer (2-1) picked up his second win of the season on the mound allowing just one run on five hits in the complete game victory. He struck out six and walked one.
