Vernon County authorities are seeking the public’s help in tracking down two men suspected of stealing a safe from a residence in the city of Viroqua.

According to Vernon County Crime Stoppers of Viroqua, at noon May 16, two men claiming to be roofers entered a home on North Center Street, saying the resident’s roof was leaking and in need of repair.

The men distracted the resident while a dark-colored Sentinel safe was wheeled outside and stolen.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken. Some of the safe’s contents were located east of Westby.

According to witnesses, one of the suspects was 45-50 years old with  tan pants and a light build, wearing one dark jersey glove with short hair. The other male was about 25-30 years old, had dark hair and was wearing dark clothes and a ball cap.

The safe had a combination lock on it and was 2 ½ feet tall and 18 inches wide, with wheels on the bottom.

Crime Stoppers is hoping that details of the case may lead someone to remember and report what they know about the person or persons involved. Tipsters may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000 and will remain anonymous.
