MADISON – A man from Darlington, accused of driving while intoxicated in a fatal Lafayette County crash, has been sentenced to 185 days in federal prison for illegal reentry to the U.S. 23 year old Mateo Fuentes-Flores was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Madison. He was given credit for time served.
An indictment states Flores was found illegally in the U.S. on June 19 last year, two days after the fatal crash after having previously been deported.
Fuentes-Flores has pleaded not guilty in Lafayette County to charges of homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content and several other charges. Authorities responded on June 17 to a crash on Highway 11 between Platteville and Darlington.
Fuentes-Flores was eastbound when his vehicle left the road, struck a guardrail, crossed three lanes of traffic and overturned. A passenger in the vehicle, 35-year-old Patricio Soto-Alarcon of Darlington, was pronounced dead at the scene. Flores and another passenger, 22-year-old Hiliberto Fuentes Cervantes of Darlington, had minor injuries in the crash.
