The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a residential burglary in progress at 411 Orin Street in the Village of Gays Mills on Thursday, March 1 at 6:06 p.m.
The residence is owned by a 71-year-old man, who discovered the suspected burglar inside his home. The resident fled out his front door leaving the suspect inside. Once outside, the homeowner flagged down a neighbor who called the sheriff’s department.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the residence and located a man hiding behind a tree near the scene. The man was identified as Stanley Smith, 65, Gays Mills. Smith was arrested by sheriff’s deputies without incident.
Smith had to be transported to the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital by Ocooch Mountain Rescue for a cut to his forehead that he claimed happen earlier in the day during an altercation with another man.
Smith was then transported to the Crawford County Jail where he remains on a $500 cash bond for burglary charges. Smith, who appears to have been living in his vehicle, has no street address, but calls Gays Mills his home. Smith had no weapons, but was heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest, according to the sheriff’s department.
This incident remains under investigation.
