Second defendant arrested in shooting

SMELSER — The second defendant in the June 4 shooting was arrested Thursday.

Sean M. Fortney, 38, 1139 Rock Cut Road, Platteville, faces charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

Fortney is free on a $1,000 signature bond that includes a no-contact provision. His arraignment in Grant County Circuit Court is set for Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Jeremy Stonestreet, 35, Mineral Point, will have a preliminary hearing in Grant County Circuit Court in Lancaster today at 2 p.m. on a charge of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Stonestreet is free on a $2,500 signature bond. He faces a maximum penalty of 12½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted.

The charges are in connection with the shooting of Robert Hess, 34, Janesville, at Fortney’s address June 4. Hess was a witness to a confrontation between Stonestreet and Fortney, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Fortney threw a rock through the rear window of Stonestreet’s vehicle, then Stonestreet fired a 9mm handgun, shooting Hess in the stomach.
