Darlington resident seriously injured in accident

Carla J. Andrews, 60, of Darlington, was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on Thursday, Nov. 29 at approximately 3:27 on State Hwy. 78 in Gratiot Township.
According to the Lafayette County Sherriff’s report, Andrews was traveling southbound on State Hwy. 78 when a truck operated by Dean A. Dowell, 48, of Scales Mound, Ill. was traveling westbound on South Prairie Rd. and crossed the State Hwy. 78 intersection without stopping at the stop sign.
Andrews was unable to avoid striking the large truck and her car initially traveled under the large straight truck, but then was spun around in the roadway, and came to rest in the ditch. The truck came to rest on South Prairie Rd.
Andrews was extricated from her vehicle and transported by helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison for injuries received from the crash. Dowell reported no injuries.
Lafayette County Sherriff’s Department, Gratiot Fire Department, Gratiot First Response, Warren Ambulance, Rural Medical Ambulance, Lifeline Helicopter, and Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the accident scene.
The 2000 Ford car operated by Andrews received extensive damage and was towed from the scene. The 1997 Freightliner truck Dowell was operating received moderate damage and was removed from the scene by the owner. Dowell was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign. The accident remains under investigation.
 Andrews was released from the hospital on Friday, Nov. 30. According to family members she is home and recovering from her injuries, but overall she is doing fine.
