On Nov. 14, 10 Platteville High School creative writers traveled to UW–Whitewater for the annual Creative Writing Festival. They attended workshops with several hundred other high school students from Wisconsin and Illinois. Eight PHS students entered contests in the categories of poetry, essay, song lyrics, multimedia, mystery and horror — (front, from left) Tristan Hirsch, E.J. Kruser, Austin Fitzgerald, (back) Kyle McMannes, Cooper Allen, Anna Whisenant, Sophie Burton, Caitlyn McMahon, (not pictured) Madelyn White and Justin Phillips. Hirsch and Kruser won first place for their black and white comedic movie, “La Fromage,” and Kruser also won second place for his song lyrics, “Ocean Eyes.” Allen won an Honorable Mention for the presentation of his slam poem, “The Invisible Town.” The group was accompanied by Sue Kies, PHS creative writing teacher, and retired music teacher Kaaren Risic.
