To kick off the 2013–14 academic year, UW–Platteville music faculty will perform in the Faculty Gala in the Center for the Arts Brodbeck Concert Hall Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m.
This special concert combines the talents of the music department’s faculty who are renowned in their respective fields of specialization and are active performers in the tri-state area. It promises to be a memorable afternoon filled with musical solo performances, ensembles and unique collaborations.
Highlights of the concert include a vocal duet “Divas of a Certain Age,” a trumpet and organ duet, a bassoon trio, music for multiple-percussion, klezmer music and a work for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will close with a few pieces performed by Ensemble Nouvea, a UW–Platteville faculty ensemble featuring trumpet, horn, saxophone, tuba and percussion.
The concert will kick start a larger faculty music series started by the UW–Platteville Department of Performing and Visual Arts this year. Future events include a recital in the fall by Kassia: Women in Song, a faculty vocal chamber ensemble that performs the works of female composers and poets. The ensemble was named for Kassia, a Byzantine abbess, poet, composer and hymnographer who lived in the 800s A.D. and is considered one of the first medieval composers. In the spring, the music faculty will perform a concert that pairs music of the Renaissance with modern music.
Tickets for the event are $5 and may be purchased in advance by calling the University Box Office, 342-1298. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
