Platteville Fire Explorers open house Thursday night

The Platteville Fire Explorers will hold an open house at the Platteville fire station Thursday at 7 p.m.

The open house will introduce the Explorer post, which is a career-development part of the Boy Scouts of America. The program has three phases — familiarization with the fire service and suiting up; working on training scenarios, including putting out small fires; and going to fire scenes. Skills include basic First Aid and CPR, along with firefighter tactics — turnout gear, pulling hose, knowledge of fire equipment, and how a fire scene is set up.

Posts are open to males and females ages 14 to 21 who have at least completed eighth grade. Explorers need not be residents of the City of Platteville. Members are required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Members of the post can apply for the Fire Department at 19. The post meets at the fire station the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m.
