Pulitzer Prize winning author, Buzz Bissinger, spoke to the people of Lancaster June 21, on the 78th anniversary of the death of the community's hometown hero, Dave Schreiner. Schreiner was in the Marines in Okinawa during World War II, and is one of the men Bissinger spotlights in his latest book, The Mosquito Bowl. The book looks at the men who served in the Pacific who came together on Christmas Eve 1944 to play an exhibition game, a break in the long war. Schreiner, who was the MVP of the Big Ten Conference in 1942 while leading the Wisconsin Football squad to be one of the top teams in the nation, went to war, and died within hours of hostilities coming to a close in Okinawa.
