Former St. Thomas pastor dies

Rev. Lawrence Kieffer, 88, the former pastor of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Potosi and several other Southwest Wisconsin Catholic churches, died July 4.

Kieffer, a native of Mineral Point, was ordained in 1950.

The churches Kieffer served included St. Joseph in South Wayne and Immaculate Conception in Boscobel. He was a chaplain at UW Hospital and Clinics, the Veterans Administration hospital in Madison, and Oregon Correctional Institution, and was a chaplain assistant at Madison’s St. Mary’s and Meriter hospitals. He was director of vocations, judicial vicar and notary for the Madison Catholic Diocese, and notary for the Cause of Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli, O.P.

Kieffer’s funeral was July 10.
