Four injured in rural Hillsboro crash after driver falls asleep

An Elroy mother and her three children sustained minor injuries April 25 in a single-vehicle accident in Hillsboro township.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Kathryn Madden, 29, was driving northbound on Lovers Lane, north of Leverenz Road, when she  fell asleep at the wheel. Her vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway and continued traveling north in the ditch until it struck a tree.

The vehicle’s airbags deployed, and Madden was wearing a seatbelt.

Madden and two of her minor children were transported to Gundersen St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro by the Hillsboro Ambulance.  The third minor child was transported by private vehicle to Gundersen St. Joseph’s.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene was the Hillsboro Fire Department and Hillsboro Ambulance and Wonewoc Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
