With the 4th of July and America’s 250’s birthday this past weekend, those looking to celebrate the two occasions should stop down at the Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum, 1135 6th Street.
The museum has two displays set up honoring our nation’s semiquincentennial.
The first, is a multi-cultural display of dolls from different era, representing our country being often referred to as the “melting pot.”
The museum, wanting a second display, after some thought and consideration, opted to go with a “military theme.”
The museum contacted Curt Cole, Fennimore’s American Legion Post 184 Commander, and after a tour of the military memorabilia at the Legion Hall, located in the Memorial Building, the Legion agreed to lend out some of their military items.
“We lent out a general overview of items throughout the years,” Cole stated. “It (the display) goes from the Civil War through Desert Storm.”
“Most of the items on display were donated by Fennimore residents,” Cole went on to say.
Among the items on display include:
- A Civil War era sword
- Uniforms
- Photos
- World War I ammo pouches
- Food and fuel ration books also from WWI
- Helmets
- Medals, and more
One of the medals on display is a World War II era Purple Heart that Cole stated he discovered in a foot locker in the Fennimore Railroad Museum.
The Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum's regular hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday.
In addition to the items currently on display at the museum, many more are on display at the Legion Hall in Fennimore.
Anyone interested in viewing the memorabilia at the hall may contact Cole at (608) 723-8147.
