Eugene H. Meyers, age 65 of rural Darlington passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 at his home. He was born September 25, 1951 in Dodgeville the son of Henry and Fabian (Peterson) Meyers. Gene graduated from Darlington High School in 1969 and later from Madison Area Technical College with a degree in Automotive Repair in 1971. He was united in marriage to Darlene Zimmerman on April 15, 1972 in Monroe. He served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany from 1971 until he was honorably discharged in 1973. Upon his return in 1973, he began working with his dad and eventually owned and operated Meyers Service. In 2002, Gene sold his business on Main Street and moved it to his home in Fayette.
Gene is survived by his wife: Darlene at home; his mother: Fabian Meyers of Darlington; five children: Adam (Wendy) Meyers of Darlington, Stephanie (Dennis) Kraus of Middleton, Christine (Francesco) Ramos of Port Washington, Lindsay (Kevin) Montgomery of Blue Mounds, and Julie Meyers of Madison; 8 grandchildren: Kaylee, Allyson, and Lexie Meyers, Logan and Carson Kraus, Gabriela Ramos, and Nadia and Elliott Montgomery; four brothers: Duane (Mary) Meyers of Madrid, Iowa, Gilbert (Georgina) Meyers of Darlington, Gerald (Kathleen) Meyers of Black Earth, and Rodney (Tracy) Meyers of Mt. Horeb; and two sisters: Faith (Bruce) Krause of Salem, Iowa, and Ramona (David) Orton of Livingston. He was preceded in death by his father Hank in 1991.
Gene was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a proud member of Bates-O’Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington, Fayette Horseshoe League, Fayette Sportsman’s Club, and Ranch House Bowling League. Gene was an avid reader and was known for his competitive nature when it came to playing cards. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, taking two annual musky fishing trips to Hayward. Gene will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church a branch of Our Lady of Fatima Parish (104 E. Harriet Street) with Rev. John Bosco Pudhota officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O’Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. A visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and again on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. at the church.
