William A. McFarland, 78, of Elmhurst, Ill. passed away after a lengthy illness at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital on Dec. 4, 2015. He was born and raised in Darlington, the son of Ronald and Bernice McFarland. Bill graduated from Darlington High School in 1955 and Platteville State College in 1959 where he was also editor of the Exponent while in college. He began his teaching career in Bloom Elementary School, Rockford, Ill. and then Schaffer Elementary School, Atwater, Calif. He moved back to the Chicago area where he did social work for Cook County prior to becoming a supervisor in the Department of Public Aid for the State of Illinois, retiring in 1999. He was an active and longtime member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ where he faithfully served as a choir member and lay leader. He was an avid reader, loved music and antiques and enjoyed traveling with family and friends and did so extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and former co-workers.
Bill is survived by: sisters, Shirley Nethery of Darlington, Ruth Ellen (Owen) Thompson of Darlington and Jean (Edgar) Temby of Madison/Bonita Springs, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Thomas Nethery, Jack Nethery, Jo Anne Shosie, Ronald Nethery, James Nethery, Donna Douglas, Kay Steidinger, Timothy Temby and Todd Temby and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by long time friend, David Miranda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Bernice McFarland and brother-in-law Tim Nethery.
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 125 W. Church St., Elmhurst, Ill. Private inurnment at Union Grove Cemetery, Darlington, with Dr. Richard Wolf presiding.
