The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team split its final two matches of the Trinity University Fall Classic in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday. The Pioneers dropped a 24-26, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 decision to Southwestern University and closed out the day with a 24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 29-27 win over Austin College.
UW-Platteville (1-3) outhit Southwestern by a .291 to .249 margin in the loss. Samantha Rampart had a match-high 18 kills to lead the attack for the Pioneers. Briana Kaiser and LeeAnn Mizgalski had 15 and 11 kills, respectively in the loss.
Ali Sikic had her second double double of the young season with 48 assists and 13 digs. Brooke Nichols led the Pioneers with 17 digs and Andrea Larsen added 15.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers closed out its trip to San Antonio with a win over Austin College. Four players had double-digit kills to lead UW-Platteville, including Stephanie Kirchner, who had her first double double of the season with 12 kills and 19 digs.
Also with 12 kills was Rampart, plus Mizgalski and Briana Kaiser, who had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Sikic added 43 assists and three service aces in the win. The Pioneers outhit Austin College by a .265 to .160 in the win.
Next up for the Pioneers will be the UW-P Invitational, where they will host Loras and Milkin on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 and 8 p.m. and Monmouth and Central on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Kirchner earns all-tourney honors
Stephanie Kirchner, a sophomore from Sussex, was named to the Trinity Fall Classic All-Tournament Team for her efforts, this past weekend.
Kirchner had 35 kills in four matches, averaging 2.33 kills per set and she also recorded 11 blocks and .73 blocks.
Women’s soccer team throttles Ripon, 5-2
The UW-Platteville women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and three more times in the second half en route to a 5-2 win over Ripon College.
The Pioneers (2-0) overcame overcast, drizzly and cool temperatures in the win. Sophomores Melissa Dunlavy and Sarah Eck each scored twice in the win to lead a potent UW-Platteville attack that outshot Ripon by a 24 to 8 margin. Anna Strasser had a match-high six shots in the win to lead the potent attack. Jackie Baumgart added the other goal when she scored in the 50th minute.
Eck and Dunlavy each scored their first goals in the 22nd and 33rd minutes, respectively to put UW-Platteville ahead by a 2-0 margin. Ripon got on the board in the 39th minute, but the Pioneers came back with two-straight goals in the second half to stretch the margin to 4-1.
With a three-goal lead, 4-1, Brandi Peltier of Ripon scored her second goal of the contest in the 72nd minute. The Pioneers answered the goal when Dunlavy scored her second goal of the contest in the 74th minute for the win.
The last time that the Pioneers had scored five goals was when they recorded a season-high 11 against UW-Superior, last year on Oct. 16. Next up for UW-Platteville is its home opener against Clarke on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Men’s soccer blanks Ripon 1-0
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s soccer team evened its record at 1-1 with a 1-0 win over host Ripon College on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (1-1) outshot their opponents for a second-straight contest and broke open a scoreless time in the 13th minute when Brandon Chimel found the back of the net. UW-Platteville managed to outshoot Ripon by a 9 to 1 advantage in the first 45 minutes. Pioneers’ goalkeeper Jared Kuehl picked up three saves for the shutout.
Ripon (0-2) was held to just three shots compared to 13 by the Pioneers, including four by Chimel and teammate Richard Rowell to lead the aggressive attack.
UW-Platteville will host Clarke at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the home opener at Pioneer Stadium.
Women golfers finish 16th at UW-Eau Claire
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall - UW-Eau Claire Georgianni Memorial Invitational - in 16th place. The Pioneers posted a 748 (356-392) for a +168 in the 21-team field. Gustavus Adolphus won the team title with a 653 (+75) for a two-stroke victory over its closest competitor St. Olaf.
The Pioneers’ Kelsey Lieving shot her second-straight round of 88 to tie for 47th along with teammate Ellyn Subak for a 176 and 31-over par. Next, Kerrie Liske shared 75th place with a 187 (86-101) and Katie Gregorich was 108th with a 216 (103-113).
Mary Welch of UW-Stevens Point won the individual title by a stroke with an 11-over par, 156 (73-83) to edge Taylor Wells of Carleton College.
The Pioneers return to action at the UW-Oshkosh Iavitational, Sept. 10-11 at the Oshkosh Country Club.
