UWPlatteville softball team 210 after Arizona trip

Sophomore leadoff hitter Emily Woodford is batting .400 with a team-high 14 hits in 35 at-bats through 12 games for the UWPlatteville softball team.

TUCSON, Az.— The UW–Platteville softball team continued its spring break trip with one win and one loss at Lincoln Park at the Tuscon Invitational last Wednesday.

The Pioneers won their opener against MacMurray College 7–6 and dropped its second game of the day against Stevens Institute Ducks won the nightcap 9–6.

The Pioneers improved to 2–10 on the season after going 2–6 last week in Arizona.

Senior catcher Thianna Wegner went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Pioneers to victory in the opener. Wegner’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning gave UW–Platteville a 7–6 run.

Senior Jess Butzen (1–4) came on in relief in the top of the second inning and allowed the Pioneers to battle back from an 5–3 deficit. Butzen allowed just one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven to pick up her first win of the season.

Freshman third baseman Jessy Tranel went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss to Stevens. Ciera Keller hit a two-run home run.

The Pioneers began play at the Tucson Invitational with a 12–3 loss to Central, Iowa on Saturday, March 11 but bounced back with an 8–2 win over Augsburg (Minn.) later in the day.

On Sunday, UW–Platteville (1–7) suffered losses to Suffolk University (Mass.), 8–6, and Dickinson College (Pa.) 4–3. On Tuesday, UWP suffered a 7–2 loss to Greeville and 11–3 loss to Puget Sound.

Coach Andie Varsho takes her Pioneers are scheduled to travel to Mequon on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Concordia University. UWP is set to host Beloit College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. and will host Loras in another doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — The UW–Platteville softball team began the 2017 season with two losses at Webster University on Saturday, March 4. The Tigers won the opener 8–0 and the nightcap 9–1.

Woodford had two of the Pioneers’ three hits in the first game, as Webster’s Morgan Mansur threw a shutout.  The Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning in a game ended in the fifth by the eight-run rule.

Game two was also a five-inning contest as the Tigers put up eight runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game. LaRissa O’Kimosh scored UW–Platteville’s first run of the year, hitting a single and eventually coming home on an error.

FULTON, Mo. — The Pioneers (0–4) continued its season with two losses at Westminster University Sunday, March 11, 12–3 and 7–6.
