Ben Cullen Memorial Platteville Alumni Soccer Game

Saturday, Aug. 8, 4:30 p.m. at Platteville High School

     Family, freinds and former teammates will gather at Platteville High School Saturday afternoon to celebrate the memory of Ben Cullen. Cullen, 27, took his own life Nov. 11, 2014.

     Former Platteville soccer players Jesse Brown and Scott Upton organized the Ben Cullen Memorial Alumni Soccer Game to honor their friend's memory. The event is open to both boys' and girls' alumni of the Platteville/Lancaster soccer programs. Three will be one game for younger alumni at 4:30 p.m. followed by a second game at 6 p.m. for older alumni so everyone can get plenty of playing time.

     Brown has also launched an online campaign to raise money for a memorial statue dedicated to Cullen that will be placed near the varsity soccer field at Platteville High School. Brown has set up a donation page at Fundrazr.com (http://fundrazr.com/capaigns/21127c) to accept donations for the Cullen memorial. The page has already raised $1,065. Donations to the cause can also me made at Saturday's Alumni event. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Platteville/Lancaster boys' and girls' programs in Cullen's memory.

 

OTHER EVENTS OF NOTE:

Darlington Police Brat Feed and Softball Game

Thursday, Aug. 6, 5 p.m. at Riverside Park

     The City of Darlington Police Department will hold its 17th annual Police Brat Feed and Ball Game Thursday night beginning at 5 p.m. Officers will serve brats, hot dogs, chips and beverages beginning at 5 p.m. until they sell out. At 7 p.m., law enforcement officers from local, county and state level will comprise "The Enforcers" softball team that will face off agaisnt the "Community All-Stars" team of various Darlington community members. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Darlington Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

 

Platteville High School Sports Boosters Golf Outing

Friday, Aug. 7, 2:30 p.m. at Platteville Golf & Country Club

     This Platteville Sports Boosters will hold its third annual golf outing Friday afternoon with a nine-hole shotgun start set for 2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. A dinner and live and silent auction will follow golf. The golf outing is open to the public. Four-person teams are welcome or interested indivduals will be placed on a team. The cost for dinner and golf is $55 per person or $20 just for dinner.

 

Platteville Sprint Triathlon

Saturday, Aug. 8, 7:30 a.m. at Platteville Family Aquatic Center

     The Platteville Park and Recs Department will host its 12th annual sprint triathlon Saturday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Platteville Family Aquatic Center. Contestants will start with a 1/3-mile swim, followed by a 12.4-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.

 

Fennimore Gridiron Club Fundraiser (UW Athletic Sale)

Saturday, Aug. 8, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fennimore Municipal Building

     The Fennimore Gridiron Club is holding a Univeristy of Wisconsin sports athletic sale fundraiser at the Fennimore Municipal Building Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All items are directly from the UW and were issued to all different athletic departments. The sale includes everything and anything Wisconsin Badgers related, from football shoes to basketball jerseys. All the items for the sale were purchased from the UW athletic department and donated by Fennimore alum Tim Satterthwaite. UW-Platteville Men's Basketball Boosters Golf Outing

Saturday, Aug. 8, 11 a.m. at Platteville Golf & Country Club

     The UW-Platteville Men's Basketball Booster Club will host its annual golf outing Saturday beginning with registration at 11 a.m. The event will feature an 18-hole traditional four-person scramble with a shotgun start at noon. A cocktail hour will he held at 4 p.m. followed by a dinner, raffle and live and silent auctions from 5 to 7  p.m.
