BLANCHARDVILLE – Jeremy Richardson smacked a two-run double during the five-run seventh-inning rally to help #5-seeded Belmont stun #4-seeded Pecatonica, 12-11, in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal baseball game at a windy McKellar Park on Thursday, May 24.
The Braves (5-21 overall) trailed 10-7 heading into the seventh inning, but they strung together four hits with three Pecatonica errors to account for the five runs that thrust them into the lead at 12-10.
The Vikings (11-15) shaved a run off the deficit in the bottom of the seventh, however the Braves were able to hang on for the victory.
Jesse Richardson knocked in two runs and earned the victory on the mound in relief after allowing just one earned run over the final three and a third innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
Avery Willborn and David Stoney each went 2-for-5 with a triple, while Lucas Stoney went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles for the Braves, who plated 11 unearned runs off eight Pecatonica errors.
Belmont advanced on to face top-seeded Barneveld in a regional semifinal contest on Tuesday, May 29. The game was over too late to appear in this week’s issue. Full coverage will be found in next week’s R.J. Sports.
