SOUTH WAYNE — After feeding their fans during their annual Soup4Kupe scholarship fund raiser, the Black Hawk girls’ basketball team had a little feast of their own as they picked apart the Argyle Orioles, 71-20, in their Six Rivers East season opener held at BHHS on Thursday, Nov. 30.
    The Orioles (4-1 overall, 0-1 SRE) came into the game unbeaten in four outings to start the season, but found the going a bit tougher against the Warriors (4-0, 1-0).
    Black Hawk raced out to a 49-7 lead in the first half, and then went on to outscore the Orioles, 22-13, in the second half to finish off the rout.
    Sophomore Natalie Leuzinger tallied a game-high 25 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds to lead the Warriors. Freshman Bailey Butler contributed 20 points, five assists, five steals and four boards, while sophomore Hannah Butler added nine points and four rebounds in the win.
    Senior Hannah Herbst chipped in with five assists and three steals for Black Hawk.
    “Argyle certainly came in and battled, but we were able to hit a lot of shots and do a lot of things well offensively. I think that we’re really lucky we have so many kids who contribute in the way they do,” said Black Hawk head coach Michael Flanagan.
    The big winner on the night was the scholarship fund for former Black Hawk teacher Kelly Kupersmith with more than $4,000 getting raised in her memory through the soup dinner and auction items.
    Black Hawk– ranked #1 in Division 5 in the first WisSports.net state coaches’ poll– added a pair of impressive non-conference road wins last week after throttling New Glarus, 76-36, on Tuesday, Nov. 28, and then thumping Cuba City (#4 in D4), 65-31, on Saturday, Dec. 2.
    The Warriors used their patented fast starts in both games, jumping ahead 30-10 in the first half against the Glarner Knights (2-3) in Thursday’s outing and scoring the first 27 points en route to an early 41-2 lead over the Cubans in Saturday’s win.
    Leuzinger scored a game-high 21 points in Thursday’s game, and she added a double-double against the Cubans with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
    B. Butler tallied 19 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists against the Knights, and had 11 points, six steals and four assists against the Cubans.
    H. Butler had 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in Thursday’s game, and seven points and seven rebounds in Saturday’s game; while Herbst registered seven points, six boards, four steals and three assists against the Knights, and six assists against the Cubans.
    Maddy Huschitt added 11 points, two assists and two steals against New Glarus. Brianna Hagen scored 13 points and Kaylee Meyer chipped in with seven points against Cuba City.
    “In my mind we have to continue to challenge ourselves. We have a long way to go (in the season). I know starting off on those runs are pretty impressive, but there are still a lot of things we need to talk about in terms of fundamental things we need to work on.
    I think our team chemistry is really good and I think our role definition is really good, too. We’re getting opportunities this season to see what these kids can do. As long as they realize it’s all about appreciating the moment and the opportunity and keep embracing that and not worrying about who is getting the credit, then we’ll be fine,” explained Flanagan.
