MONROE – Belmont-Platteville senior Dusty Jentz became a four-time Monroe Invitational champion by pinning his way to the 170-pound title at the annual prep wrestling tournament held at Monroe High School on Saturday, Jan. 21.
After receiving a first round bye, Jentz (27-1) notched a fall over Whitewater’s Zach Miles in 5:38 and another fall over Lancaster’s Trae Mezera in 4:49 to claim his fourth career title at the event.
Jentz’s efforts helped the Braves finish in fifth-place at the meet with 108 points. Lancaster crowned four champions on the way to the team title (210), followed by Whitewater (181) Monroe (175) and Cuba City/Southwestern (137). Darlington finished ninth (76) on the day.
Belmont/Platteville seniors Adam Niehaus (120) and David Stoney (220) earned second-place finishes on the day, while sophomore Lucas Stoney (285) finished third and sophomore John Hentrich (138) and junior Vinnie Anderson (160) placed fourth for the Braves.
Niehaus (28-6) had to battle through a round-robin format in his weight class to take second, posting a 4-1 record with two pins. A loss by pin to Lancaster’s Kyle Mezera in 3:25 in round four kept the senior from the 120-pound title.
    D. Stoney (24-6) made the finals at 220 thanks to a bye and a 4:30 pin over Lancaster’s Curtis Olson, but he also had to settle for second after dropping a hard-fought 3-1 overtime decision to Monroe’s Trevor Gorr. Last year at this tournament, Gorr pinned D. Stoney for the 215-pound crown.
    L. Stoney (22-9) went 3-1 with a pair of pins at 285, while Hentrich (16-16) and Anderson (20-11) each went 2-2 for the Braves.
Seniors Brady McDaniel (145) and Tyler Black (182) each placed third in their respective weight class to lead the Redbirds.
    B. McDaniel (15-12), who went 3-1 with a pin at 145, defeated Big Foot/Williams Bay’s David Guevara by a score 6-4 to claim his third; while T. Black (11-7), who also went 3-1 with three pins in his first meet back since suffering a mid-season injury, stuck Lancaster’s Cody Glass in 1:43 to garner his third.
Senior Eli Humphrey (11-12) went 2-2 with a pin to finish fourth at 195, sophomore Hayden Black (19-9) went 2-2 with two pins to take fifth at 285, and senior Scott McDaniel (11-17) went 2-3 with two pins on the way to a sixth at 152 for the ‘Birds.
Junior Alex Niehaus (7-11) added a fifth for the Braves at 113, while senior Michael Sinclair (10-13) placed fifth at 120 and senior Bo Brunkow (17-6) added a sixth at 132 for the ‘Birds.
Darlington wraps up the dual meet season at Iowa-Grant on Friday, Jan. 27, 7 p.m.
Belmont/Platteville is off until Saturday, Feb. 4, when they head to Mineral Point to participate in the 2012 SWAL-SWC Clash.
