BENTON – The Shullsburg/Benton softball team couldn’t stop one rally in time and they couldn’t complete another in loss to Pecatonica and Potosi in Six Rivers action.
The visiting Vikings scored five times in the top of the fifth inning to slip past the Miner-Zephyrs for a 7-5 win at Benton’s Swift Park on Tuesday, April 28.

Kailee Schraepfer drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Vikings, while Brooke Johnson added two RBI and a run for Pec.

The Miner-Zephyrs (3-8 overall, 2-6 SRW) held a 5-0 lead after three innings of play, and then struggled to generate any offense the rest of the way against Vikings’ pitcher Emily Scoville.

The Vikings broke their shutout with a run in the fourth before tacking on five unearned runs off Shulls-Bent’s Hattie Rennert. The guests added an insurance run in the sixth, but it wasn’t needed as Scoville tossed up goose-eggs in the sixth and seventh frames.

Lily Carver went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI for the Miner-Zephyrs. Jenna Droessler finished 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI, while Jada Hicks scored twice and Rayvn Gile and Montanna Burmeister each added doubles.

Scoville got the win after allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. Rennert yielded just one earned run on six hits and four walks, and she struck out three batters in the loss.

At Potosi, on Monday, May 4, the host Chieftains plated runs in five of their six at-bats and held off a late Shullsburg/Benton rally to post a 6-3 Six River West victory.

Potosi scored once in the first and twice in the second to take an early 3-0 lead, and then added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to go up 6-0.

The Miner-Zephyrs finally broke the shutout in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs to make things interesting, but Potosi shut down the rally in time to hang on for the win.

Gile launched a two-run home run for the guests in the seventh.

Shullsburg/Benton has upcoming games at Argyle on Thursday, May 7, at home against Scales Mound/River Ridge on Monday, May 11, and at Cassville/River Ridge (CHS) on Tuesday, May 12. All three games are set to start at 5 p.m.
