PATCH GROVE - They trailed just 9-8 after one quarter of play, but then the River Ridge varsity girls’ basketball team was outscored 29-17 in the remaining three quarters of Monday night’s season opener against visiting Fennimore.
The host Timberwolves suffered a 38-25 loss to the Golden Eagles, and is off to an 0-1 start to the 2012-13 basketball season.
After being held to just two points in the second quarter, coach Caron Townsend’s squad trailed 15-10 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Fennimore improved on their lead, outscoring the Timberwolves, 12-6, to take a 27-16 lead into the fourth quarter.
Junior guard Taylor Crapp led River Ridge with nine points, nine rebounds and two assists, while fellow junior guard Meagan Herrick added eight points, two assists and two of her team’s five steals.
As a team, the Timberwolves made 9-of-47 (19%) field goal attempts, including 0-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc.
They were 7-of-9 (78%) from the free throw line, but committed 20 turnovers in the contest.
This Thursday night, the River Ridge ladies will host Argyle in a non-conference contest, then will head to North Crawford on Monday, Dec. 3.
