Viking King leads raid on Miners

A GROUP of Shullsburg defenders team up to bring down Pecatonica/Argyles Chase Norton during Saturdays game. Leading the way for the Miners were Hervey Trejo (right), Brett Matye (center) and Connor Crotty (left).

BLANCHARDVILLE – Jon Hendrickson took his duties as Pecatonica’s Homecoming King very seriously on Saturday afternoon, and thanks to his efforts the Vikings had a lot to celebrate.
The senior quarterback threw for two touchdowns, ran for two more and added a punt return for yet another score to lead Pecatonica/Agyle over Shullsburg, 41-6, in a Six Rivers Conference clash at McKellar Park on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Hendrickson’s 74-yard punt return TD put the Vikings (3-1 in SRC & overall) on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter, but it was the work he did at the end of the first half that really did in the Miners (1-2, 2-2).
Facing a 3-and-13 from the Shullsburg 30 with under four minutes remaining in the half, Hendrickson shrugged off a blitzing Shullsburg defender to avoid a sack and then launched a bomb to his go-to receiver, Dillon Conwell, who managed to out-jump a Miner defensive back in the end zone for a deflating score.
Hendrickson added the two-point conversion to put the hosts ahead 14-0 with 3:40 to play in the half.
The Miners drove to midfield on their ensuing possession, but a risky decision to go for it on 4th-and-3 from the PA 49 backfired when sophomore quarterback Brett Matye was stopped for no gain with 1:27 left until halftime.
That left plenty of time for the Vikings to get back into the end zone, especially after a 50-yard gain by running back Alec Treuthardt on the first play from scrimmage took the ball to the Shullsburg 1. Hendrickson took it in from there, and Christopher Severson tacked on the extra point to send the Vikings into the intermission sporting a 21-0 advantage.
Hendrickson added a 5-yard TD run on the Vikings’ first drive of the second half and hooked up with Conwell on an 18-yard scoring strike on their second drive to extend the lead to 34-0.
A 49-yard TD jaunt by Nathan Loyd with 7:39 to play in the game gave the hosts a 41-0 lead and turned on the continuous clock.
Shullsburg closed the game with their best ofthe day, a five-play, 65-yard march that ended with Matye taking an option-keeper 38 yards to the house to put the Miners on the board. It was the longest play from scrimmage for the Miners this season.
Hendrickson finished with 162 passing yards after connecting on 17-of-25 attempts with two TD and an interception, and he tacked on 83 yards on the ground on 13 carries with two more scores.
Conwell hauled in nine catches for 108 yards and two TD, while Treuthardt ran six times for 71 yards and had four catches for 46 yards as the Vikings rolled up over 400 yards of total offense with 282 yards coming on the ground and another 162 coming through the air.
Junior halfback Nathan Houtakker paced the Miners by rushing for 109 yards on 21 carries. Matye chipped in with 25 rushing yards and 28 passing yards.
Defensively, senior defensive end Jeremy Ubersox led the way with 14 tackles and an interception for the Miners. Brett Knautz and Connor Crotty each chipped in with 10 tackles apiece for the guests.
Shullsburg has another tough task in store for them when they return home to face league-leading and #3-ranked Potosi (4-0, 3-0) in a Six Rivers contest at Badger Park. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
