Ashton Miess qualifies for state wrestling competition
From Riverdale High School
Miess goes to state
Ashton Miess with his sectional championship chart.

MUSCODA - Sophomore Ashton Miess will be making his second trip to the state tournament after winning the 138 pound sectional championship on Saturday at Mineral Point.  Six other wrestlers placed in the top six with Justice Dilley and Nick Stitzer finishing third, one spot from qualifying.  The team finished 6th place overall out of the 22 competing schools.

Ashton started his day with two technical falls before taking on a wrestler from Cochrane Fountain City in the finals.  His competitor finished fourth at last year’s state tournament.  The match was a great bout between tough, evenly matched opponents. After an action packed scoreless first period Ashton would surrender a reversal but would come back with an escape and takedown to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.  Ashton would increase the lead with an escape halfway through the third period to take a 4-2 lead.  A back and forth final minute resulted in no points and Ashton coming home with the championship.  Ashton is 15-0 on the season and ranked 4th going into the state tournament.

Senior Justice Dilley came close to qualifying for his second state tournament but came up one place short. He started his day with a second period pin before losing 5-2.  Justice bounced back with a technical fall in the wrestlebacks.  The opponent he lost to would fall in the finals and Justice was not awarded a wrestleback.  Justice finished his senior year 13-2 and capped off a great career at Riverdale.

Nick Stitzer lost by pin to the eventual champion in the first round and then went to work.  Nick would rattle off three straight victories, two by decision and one by pin to finish third.  Nick was defeated in his wrestleback for second by a returning state placewinner.  This was a great tournament for the sophomore who finished the season 10-8.

Rylee Wanek put together a solid tournament at his first sectional meet.  Rylee won by technical fall in the first round before losing in the second round. In the wrestleback Rylee cruised to a 10-3 win.  He was then defeated in his third place match.  Rylee finished a strong Freshman season at 11-6.

Ty Dilley capped off his career with a 5th place finish.  Ty would finish 2-2 on the day with a pin and major decision in his fifth place match. Ty finishes his senior season with an 8-7 record.  Jacob Grimm won a match by pin on his way to placing sixth.  Jacob finishes his senior season with a 10-7 record.  Dawson Wilmot also won a match by pin to place sixth. Dawson went 9-7 during his senior year. Freshman Kadin Rynes went 0-2 in his first sectional tournament and gained some valuable experience at 160 pounds. Kadin finishes the season with a 6-6 record.

As always this sectional produced some great wrestling.  The kids competed hard all day and held their own against top competition.  It is always tough to see the seniors’ seasons end outside of the state tournament.  Justice, Ty, Jacob and Dawson along with Hayden Conner provided Riverdale Wrestling with a lot of great memories.  The contributions they have made to Riverdale Wrestling will be tough to replace.  The younger kids have something to build on moving forward and the future looks strong at Riverdale.  Thank you to Dale Spies, Josh Wanek and Shane Dilley for filling in during my absence. They did a great job keeping the kids competing at a high level and had them well prepared for the past two Saturdays.

Ashton will now compete at the state tournament Saturday at Wausau East High School.  Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:00 with the finals and placement matches starting at 5:00.  Ashton’s first round opponent will be Tyler Sunday, a 13-2 Freshman from Clear Lake.
