Darlington-area fall prep sports teams ready for action

SHULLSBURG SENIOR Jacob Scott (#10) will lead the Miners into the 2011 prep football season against Black Hawk's Hayden Schliem (#11), Mike Walker (#23) and the rest of the Warriors during the sixth annual Six Rivers Football Jamboree hosted by UW-Platteville on Saturday, Aug. 20. Shullsburg and Black Hawk were both playoff teams a year ago, and each would like to challenge for the conference championship this season. Belmont also plays Highland at the Jamboree.

DARLINGTON - With the start of volleyball and cross country practice on Monday, the 2011 fall prep sports season is now in full swing.


    The Darlington/Cuba City girls’ golf team participated in their first meet of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 16, when they took part in the Beloit Invitational. The Lady Redbirds travel to Lena to face Lena/Winslow and Sterling Valley in a non-conference triangular on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m., and they head to Westby for the 2011 Viroqua Invitational on Friday, Aug. 19, starting at 8:30 a.m.

The co-op will head to Prairie du Chien for a dual meet on Monday, Aug. 22, at 9 a.m. and an invitational on Friday, Aug. 26, at 8:30 a.m.; then the ‘Birds head home to host conference foe Lancaster and Southwestern in their home opener at the Darlington Country Club on Monday, Aug. 29, at 9 a.m.

The Darlington football team opens the year by hosting Platteville in a non-conference game at University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 19, starting at 7 p.m.

Belmont meets Highland at the 2011 Six Rivers Football Jamboree back at Ralph E. Davis Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m., while Shullsburg faces Black Hawk in a 5 p.m. game at the Six Rivers Jamboree.

Volleyball scrimmages will be held around the area on Saturday, Aug. 20, with Belmont heading to Platteville at 9 a.m., while Shullsburg hosts Black Hawk along with several other schools.

The 2011 Six Rivers West Invitational will be held at Shullsburg High School on Saturday, Aug. 27, with Shullsburg and Belmont competing for the title, while Black Hawk and Darlington will be in action at the Six Rivers East Invitational held at Juda High School. Both tournaments begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Redbirds begin the SWAL volleyball season by hosting Iowa-Grant in their opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m.

Shullsburg and Belmont both open Six Rivers West play on Tuesday as well with the Miners hosting River Ridge and the Braves entertaining Potosi. The junior varsity games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the varsity games to follow.

The Warriors begin their Six Rivers East season at home against Barneveld on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Finally, the Darlington boys’ and girls’ cross country teams open up their season by hosting the 27th annual Alumni Cross Country Meet at the Darlington High School course on Saturday, Aug. 27. The girls’ team races against the former Redbird stars starting at 8:30 a.m., while the Redbird boys’ team takes on the DHS alums at approximately 9 a.m.

The Redbirds kick off the regular season by hosting their annual multi-school invitational at DHS on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 9 a.m.
