LA CROSSE — After placing 10th a year ago at 145 pounds at Bi-State, the beefed up Nowak won five matches and picked up a forfeit along the way to capture the 170-pound title at the 54-team event that was held last Monday and Tuesday at the La Crosse Center.
Nowak (20–3) pinned Belmont/Platteville’s Grey Genzoli in the opening round, then after picking up a forfeit, scored a 12–3 major decision to defeat Baraboo’s Hermes Duran to reach the quarterfinals.
After an 11–4 decision over Hudson’s Dylan Anderson, Nowak survived a 3–2 battle with De Soto’s Lance Buckles in the semifinal round.
In the 170-pound championship Nowak scored a 9–5 decision over Muskego’s Brady McFarland.
Freshman Max Maylor (21–4) went 6–2 and placed fifth at 120 pounds.
Sophomore Sawyer Sarbacker (14–6) received a bye and won three straight matches to reach the semifinals, but suffered three straight losses to place sixth at 106.
Senior Kyle Soderstrom (16–8) advanced to the quarterfinals with a bye and back-to-back wins, but finished 3–4 and placed 12th at 220.
The Panthers sent 11 wrestlers to Bi-State and scored 133.5 points to finish third in Division 3 behind Stratford (304.5) and Lancaster (133.5).
