MIFFLIN — Iowa–Grant’s Brady Peat gave Panther fans a glimpse of what’s to come in Friday night’s season opener.
The senior halfback, who rushed for 1,328 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago, appears to be even better this fall.
Peat piled up a career-high 255 yards rushing and five touchdowns to carry the Panthers to a dominating 38–14 non-conference victory over visiting Richland Center Friday night at IGHS.
I–G senior fullback Clayton Kite opened the scoring with a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter, but it was the Peat show after that.
Peat toted the rock 28 times in the game, scoring on runs of 19 and 5 yards in the second quarter to give the Panthers (1–0) a comfortable 18–0 halftime lead.
He broke free for a 60-yard third quarter score, then added TD runs of 21 and 3 yards in the final period to close out the scoring.
Richland Center (0–1) added a pair of late scores on a Keon Miller 3-yard run early in the fourth quarter and an 85-yard kick return by Quin Tydrich, that was sandwhiched by a pair of Peat scores.
“Our blocking, including backs and receivers, was ok for a first game and Brady ran very hard,” said Iowa–Grant head coach Gary Allen. “Brady is a very hard worker and that translates to the field. He has experience, he is quick, he has good vision, but mostly he runs very hard. He gives everything he has for the team.”
Iowa–Grant held he Hornets to 193 yards of total offense and just nine first downs.
Clayton Kite led the Panthers defense with 12 stops.
“Clayton had a good game,” added Allen. “He makes our defensive calls and on field adjustments. Clayton flies all over the field and gives great effort.”
The Panthers will look to move to 2–0 Friday when they travel to Wauzeka–Steuben/Seneca for another non-conference game. The Blue-Golds were 38–0 winners over Boscobel in their season opener.
