GALENA — Iowa–Grant senior Derek Peat is one solid round away from qualifying for a return trip to the WIAA State Golf Tournament.
     Last Tuesday Peat shot 6-over-par 77 to finish third at the WIAA Division 3 Southwestern Regional at the Galena (Ill.) Golf Course. His third-place finish was good enough to earn an individual berth in this past Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 Wisconsin Heights sectional at the House on the Rock Resort near Spring Green.
     Lancaster senior Zach Hentrich shot an even par 71 to earn medalist honors and lead the Arrows to the regional team title.
     Iowa–Grant finished eighth as a team with a four-man score of 397, but Peat earned a fourth straight trip to sectionals as one of the top four individual finishers not on a sectional qualifying team.
     Lancaster (328), as well as Orfordville Parkview (352), Southwestern (358) and Argyle/Pecatonica (362) earned the four sectional team berths.
     A year ago Peat shot a 69 at the Dodge–Point Country Club to win the Mineral Point Regional. He then shot an 82 at the New Glarus Sectionals and tied for sixth at the D3 state tournament with a two-day score of 161.
     As a sophomore in 2011 Peat shot an 85 to finish 11th at sectionals.
     Tuesday Peat shot a 5-over-par 40 on the front nine, before catching fire on the back nine to shot a 1-over-par 37, including birdies on the par 5 10th and par 5 18th holes. His round included three birdies, eight pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys.
     Iowa–Grant junior Austin Upman shot a 105 to place 34th at regionals.
     Junior Brett Wunderlin shot a 107 to tie for 36th and sophomore Jordan Jenks rounded out the Panthers’ score with a 108, good for 38th place. Sophomore Logan Bomkamp tied for 42nd place with a 110.
