SPRING GREEN — Freshman guard Brynlee Nelson scored a game-high 18 points, but visiting Fennimore suffered a 59–42 non-conference loss at River Valley last Tuesday night.

Emily Briehl scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Blackhawks (4–13), who outscored the Eagles 32–19 in the second half.

“We turned it over too much in first half, so to be only down four I felt pretty good,” said Fennimore head coach Kevin Everson. “We hit some shots and stayed in the ball game in the first half, but we had a tough time covering their high low offense and they shot the ball really well in the second half. We didn’t generate enough good looks offensively, settled for too many jumpers after halftime.”

Bailey Kreul and Ashley Lang each finished with nine points in the loss for Fennimore. Lang also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Host Darlington handed Fennimore a 64–34 SWAL loss Friday night.

Kathleen Mathis scored a game-high 22 points, and Kaylee Meyer added 16 to lead the victorious Rebirds (14–4, 10–1), who are tied for first-place in the SWAL with Cuba City (14–5, 10–1).

Nelson had 11 points, three assists and two rebounds to lead the Eagles, who fell to 4–15 overall and 1–10 in the SWAL with the loss.

Lang had eight points and four boards, and Kreul added six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

“Darlington puts a lot of pressure on with their 1–3–1 zone and they forced us into some careless turnovers that let them get out in transition,” said Everson. “We got a bunch of good looks in first half, didn’t knock any down. Sixteen of our 25 turnovers came in the first half, so we dug ourselves a pretty big hole and only shot it at 20 percent. We have to give Darlington a bunch of credit. They are long and athletic and get their hands on a lot of passes. We kept battling in the second half and executed a little better on offensive and handled the same pressure much better.”

NEXT UP: Fennimore hosted Mineral Point (14–5, 9–2) Tuesday night and will now travel to Riverdale (8–9, 4–7) Friday.
