Lady Wildcats lose grip on early lead

Southwestern senior Katie Droeszler had a record-setting day at the plate this past Monday evening, going 5-for-5 with five runs scored and two RBIs.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Southwestern varsity softball team suffered an 11-10 loss to host Fennimore, dropping their Southwest Wisconsin Activities League record to 2-11.

“By her standards, Katie has struggled a bit at the plate recently, so it was nice to see her heating up as we hope to finish the season on a positive note,” said coach Tom Koeller.

Droeszler accounted for five of her team’s 12 hits, and scored five of her team’s 10 runs.

Going 2-for-5 at the plate were Jessica Carnes, Morgan Kuhl and Emma Droeszler, Kuhl with three RBIs.

After giving up seven runs in the bottom half of the second inning, then two more in the third, the Wildcats trailed 10-6 going into the fifth.

That’s where they scored two runs to make it 10-8, then added two more in the seventh to tie the game at 10-10.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up the game with one run in the bottom of the seventh, finishing with 10 hits of their own, while both teams committed three errors.

Taking the loss was senior pitcher Morgan Kuhl, who in six innings gave up 11 runs, six earned, off 10 hits. She also struck out five batters and walked seven.

In a non-conference contest against host Belmont last Friday evening, the Wildcats were held to just two hits in a 12-1 loss.

In four innings of action, Belmont pitcher Kalyn Kamps gave up one earned run off two hits, while striking out six batters and walking two.

“We simply couldn’t get anything going against Kamps, and the bottom half of the Belmont order went 7-for-10 to help Belmont take control of the game,” explained coach Koeller.

Taking the loss for Southwestern was Morgan Kuhl, who in four innings gave up 12 earned runs off nine hits, while striking out one batter and walking six.

As the No. five seed in their WIAA division 4 regional bracket, the Wildcat will travel to No. 4 seeded Wauzeka on Thursday to open playoff action. Regional semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 21, and regional finals on Thursday, May 23.
