Martensen takes home title from Viking Invitational

In her first race of the season, sophomore Kayci Martensen ran away with the girls’ individual title to highlight the performance of the Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton cross country team at the 2019 Viking Invitational hosted by Mount Horeb High School at the Norsk Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 21.

MOUNT HOREB – In her first race of the season, sophomore Kayci Martensen ran away with the girls’ individual title to highlight the performance of the Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton cross country team at the 2019 Viking Invitational hosted by Mount Horeb High School at the Norsk Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Martensen, who missed the Wildcats’ first two races of the season, got right to work in Saturday’s race     besting the field by 48 seconds to take home the girls’ 5,000-meter crown in a time of 19:03.

The Lady Wildcats placed eighth in the girls’ meet with 179 points.

Junior Bailey Lutes placed 20th in 22:17, followed by fellow juniors Molly Schmitt in 47th (25:19) and Xanah Knoblich in 55th (28:18). Freshman Michaela Runde placed 56th (28:27) to complete the team scoring, and frosh Ashlyn Pitzen was 59th (29:01) for the ‘Cats.

In the boys’ meet, the Wildcats had all five team runners finish within a minute of one another to place fourth overall with 110 points.

Sophomore Drew Robson was 15th (18:52) and senior Jackson Noll placed 17th (19:00) to lead the way for the tri-op in the boys’ race.

Sophomore Jackson Klang came in 24th (19:31), followed by sophomore Nate Reiff in 26th (19:46) and freshman Justin Reuter in 28th (19:53) for the ‘Cats.

Senior Tyler Reuter was 31st (20:22) and sophomore Michael Austin finished 35th (20:46) for the varsity team.

The host Vikings claimed the boys’ team title with 39 points, while McFarland captured the girls’ team title with 59 points.

Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld senior Christian Patzka won the boys’ individual title in a time of 16:57. 

Last Thursday’s rained out Richland Center Invitational has been rescheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, starting at 5 p.m.

The cross country team will also be making Homecoming run to Cuba City on Benton on Friday night to deliver the game balls to each school’s Homecoming football games.
