MADISON — Iowa–Grant’s Derek Peat closed out his fine prep golf career with an 11th place finish at last week’s WIAA Division 3 state golf tournament at University Ridge near Madison.
Peat shot a two-day total of 157 (79–78), which was actually four strokes better than his sixth place finish a year ago, but Division 3 as a whole improved a great deal in just one year.
This year’s winning score of 146, shot by Eleva–Strum’s Jake Rogness (73–73), was nine strokes better than the last year’s D3 winning score of 155 shot by Southwestern’s Josh Smith.
This year Smith shot a 149 (73–79) and finished fifth.
Peat shot a 7-over-par 79 in Monday’s first round with three birdies, seven pars and six bogeys. He birdied three holes (the 11th, 14th and 15th) in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to go to +4, but bogeyed 17 and took a double bogey 6 on the 18th to finish the day.
Tuesday Peat shot a 78, with two birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys.
Over the course of the two days Peat played the back nine at 4-over-par while recording a +6 42 and a +3 39 for a total of +9 on the narrow front nine.
Lancaster made a run at the D3 team title, but settled for second, 10 strokes back of team champion Osseo–Fairchild.
Lancaster’s team score of 649 was 10 strokes better than Cuba City’s title-winning 659 from a year ago, but the Arrows couldn’t catch Osseo–Fairshild’s 639.
Lancaster junior Zach Hentrich tied for seventh with a two-day 152 (76–76). Lancaster sophomore Andrew Gates tied for 17th with Cuba City’s Zach Stewart at 165.
Lancaster’s Nathan Farrey and John VanDeHey tied for 19th with identical 166s.
