HAZEL GREEN – The Southwestern varsity football team picked up its first victory of the season last Friday night with a 28–6 win over visiting Boscobel (2–2, 0–2 SWAL).
Coach Matt Clendenen’s squad now sits 1–1 in Southwest Wisconsin Activities League action, and 1–3 overall heading into this week’s game with visiting Iowa-Grant (3–1, 2–0).
Last Friday night, the Wildcats finished with 307 total yards of offense to their opponent’s 143.
On the ground, Southwestern held a significant advantage, rushing for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 54 attempts, while holding the Bulldogs to just 29 yards rushing on 23 attempts.
Senior running back Cory Miller led all rushers with 118 yards and two TDs on 25 carries, scoring on runs of nine and one yards in the first half.
Miller also scored on a two-point conversion run, and gave the Wildcats a 14–0 lead at the half.
Senior quarterback Jacob Banfield finished with 77 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 23 attempts, scoring from four yards out in the third quarter and then again from four yards in the fourth.
Bainfield also completed 11-of-16 passing attempts for 107 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Sophomore Austin Stangl was the team’s leading receiver with three catches for 54 yards.
Defensively, the Wildcats blocked two punts that gave their offense good field position inside their opponent’s 20-yard line, and both led to scores for the home team.
