LANCASTER - Winning 10-of-14 matches last Tuesday night, the Lancaster varsity wrestling team easily defeated visiting Prairie du Chien, 48-20, in the season’s first Southwest Wisconsin Conference dual meet.

The Flying Arrows collected three pins, two technical falls, two major decisions, and two regular decisions, while also being given one forfeit.

Tuesday’s meet began at 120 pounds, where Prairie’s Clayton Beers collected a 5-3 decision over Lancaster’s Dustin Reynolds.

From there, Lancaster collected 36 straight points in the next eight weight classes.

Sophomore Cole Martin started things off with a first-period pin at 126 pounds, while junior Kyle Mezera also scored a pin at 138.

Picking up a first-period pin at 220 pounds was Lancaster senior John VanDeHey, while sophomore Tyson Wolf received a forfeit at 106 pounds.

This past Saturday, the Arrows competed at the Tomah Scramble, where they finished first as a team with 445 total points. Coming in second was Lodi with 392, while Middleton was third at 362.

The Arrows crowned five individual champions on Saturday, to go along with one runner-up finish, and one fourth-place finisher.

Among those taking individual crowns and going 5-0 in their bracket, were: 106-pound sophomore Tyson Wolf, 126-pound sophomore Cole Martin, 182-pound sophomore David Chadd, 145-pound junior Trenton Cornell and 170-pound junior Ethan Soderstrom.

According to coach Brad Sturmer, if a most valuable wrestler would have been named at Saturday’s tournament, his vote would have certainly gone to Cornell.

The 145-pound junior won three of Saturday’s matches by major decision, and the other two by pins.

In his championship match, Cornell dominated Mauston’s Colin Dolata, who was a state champion two years ago and did not compete at state last year due to an injury. Cornell defeated Dolata on Saturday by a score of 12-1.

Going 4-1 on Saturday and finishing second in the 132-pound weight class was junior Kyle Mezera, who lost his championship match, 3-2, to undefeated Dalton Gorman (12-0) of Mosinee.

Senior Joe Crosby finished fourth at 138 pounds, going 2-3 on the day, with his first loss coming in his third match of the day.

Freshman Dustin Reynolds placed sixth in the 120-pound weight class, while senior John VanDeHey was seventh at 220 pounds.

After two dual meets and two tournaments, three wrestlers from Lancaster remain unbeaten on the year with records of 12-0. They are Martin, Cornell and Chadd, while Soderstrom and Mezera are close behind, both at 11-1.
